Aerofly FS 2 - Flight Simulation Made In Germany

I've had my eye on Aerofly FS 2 (Steam) for a while now. The flight sim made in Germany by IPACS recently came out of early access, so I decided to pick it up! I was especially excited because it has native VR support, which I would have loved in the first sim they released. These are my thoughts after a few hours of flying around. Does it hold up to the standards of German manufacturing quality?

Update: I've re-reviewed Aerofly FS 2 recently. I recommend reading it after this article; the new one focuses more on VR, while this is more about the bigger picture.

Update: FlyInside FSX & HTC Vive - No More Crashes

A short follow-up on my previous post here.

After not using VR for a while and getting many different updates in the meantime (Windows, Nvidia drivers, FlyInside, Steam VR and whatnot) I grabbed my Vive again and tried it FlyInside once more.

Behold, no a crashes! I can't exactly say what happened or why, but it would seem some update - or a combination of many updates - fixed FlyInside. Which is very cool!

It's sad I don't get around to flying a whole lot lately.

VRS F/A-18E Superbug (Do you even need a review?)

The VRS F/A-18E Superbug. What can I say?

Well, if you're even slightly interested in the flight sim world, you have already heard about it. If you're into military flight simulation, you probably own it, too. So if you are reading this, you must either be really out of touch with flight simulation, or maybe just want a second (or fifteenth) opinion on this beast of a simulation. After all, it's price tag is quite hefty if you consider the cost of TacPack as well. So, is it worth it? (TL;DR: Yes.) Continue reading "VRS F/A-18E Superbug (Do you even need a review?)"

Aerosoft's DHC-6 Twin Otter Extended

The de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a twin engine turboprop STOL plane - short takeoff & landing. Believe me, if you've never seen a "Twotter" land or take off, you've not really seen what STOL is about. And Aerosoft created a virtual representation of it, so I definitely needed to check it out.

My first thought: It's engines tend to catch on fire quickly if you're not careful...

FlyInside: FSX in VR with the HTC Vive

If you've not spent enough money for flight sim things already and you're thinking: "What else can I buy for my setup to make it better?", then you may not even have considered VR an option yet. Well, you should, especially if X-Plane 11 - or whatever big next generation simulation may come - brings native support, and headsets get improved. For now however, there's FlyInside and the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift.

Disclaimer: I kept having issues with my specific setup and encountered many crashes; I'm blaming my FSX install with way too many addons for this, as others do not share my somewhat negative experience. Additionally, the FlyInside team has generously offered their help and are working with me to resolve these problems, therefore I'll focus on the other (great) things instead!

UPDATE: As I have posted here I did not experience the frequent crashes anymore since sometime in November '17.
